How to Protect the Leather in a Brand-New Car

New-car leather has a look and feel that’s hard to beat—soft, matte, and untouched. But that factory-fresh finish is also at its most vulnerable. UV exposure, body oils, friction, and everyday use start working against leather almost immediately. The key to long-lasting interiors is simple: protect early, maintain consistently.

In this McKee’s 37 video, the proper leather care process is broken down step by step to help preserve comfort, appearance, and long-term value.

Why New Leather Still Needs Protection

Automotive leather is coated and dyed for durability, but it’s not immune to wear. High-contact areas like driver bolsters and seat bottoms absorb oils, experience abrasion, and fade faster without protection. Starting early prevents discoloration, drying, and premature cracking.

Step 1: Clean Before You Protect

Even brand-new interiors collect dust, shipping residue, and light oils before the first drive home. A dedicated leather cleaner safely removes contaminants without stripping the leather’s finish.

Work one section at a time using a microfiber towel or soft interior brush. Light agitation lifts grime from the pores so protection products can bond properly.

Step 2: Condition to Maintain Softness

Conditioning keeps leather flexible and comfortable. Apply a small, even amount and allow it to absorb naturally. Proper conditioning leaves the surface soft and natural—not shiny or greasy.

Step 3: Add a Protective Barrier

A quality leather protectant acts as a sacrificial layer, helping to block UV damage, dye transfer, and daily wear. This barrier takes the abuse so the leather underneath doesn’t have to.

Focus on high-wear areas first, then expand protection across the rest of the seating surfaces.
