Why Polishing Before Coating Matters

Ceramic coatings are transparent. They enhance whatever is underneath them, good or bad. Swirls, oxidation, and dullness will all be sealed in if polishing is skipped. Proper polishing ensures maximum gloss, depth, and long-term satisfaction.

Step 1: Choose the Right Polisher and Pad

Select a dual action polisher for safe, controlled correction. Pair it with a polishing or light cutting pad depending on paint condition. The goal is refinement, not aggressive defect removal.

Step 2: Use a Finishing or One-Step Polish

For coating prep, a finishing polish or one-step polish is typically ideal. These products remove light defects while leaving a clean, glossy surface that coatings can bond to.

Step 3: Work in Small, Controlled Sections

Polish one section at a time using overlapping passes. Moderate speed and light pressure allow the polish to refine the paint evenly without introducing haze.

Step 4: Inspect Your Results

After polishing, wipe residue with a clean microfiber towel and inspect the paint under good lighting. The surface should look uniform, glossy, and defect-free.

Step 5: Prep for Coating Application

Once polishing is complete, remove any remaining polishing oils using a panel wipe or prep spray. This ensures the graphene ceramic coating bonds directly to the paint.

Why This Step Can’t Be Skipped

Skipping polishing may save time, but it sacrifices results. Even new vehicles benefit from a light polish to remove dealership-induced defects and maximize coating performance.
